Scholarships

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's college scholarship program eases the financial hardships of a childhood brain tumor diagnosis and helps survivors thrive by empowering them to reach their career goals. Since 2001, the PBTF has awarded more than 1,500 college scholarships to brain tumor survivors totaling $1.7 million.

When the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children merged with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, the reach of these scholarships and support they provided survivors expanded, as BTFC had two existing scholarships in place; the Larry Dean Davis Scholarship Fund and Herbert Shaw Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. While the review of these scholarship applicants has changed slightly, the scholarships remain available to Georgia survivors.

Application
Eligible candidates are able to apply for the PBTF scholarship beginning in January of each year. Find out more information and apply for a Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation scholarship.

Larry Dean Davis Scholarship Fund

Candidates must be survivors of a pediatric brain or spinal cord tumor who are Georgia residents entering or currently enrolled in an educational program at a college, university, vocational school or other setting. The award will be paid directly to the student’s school.

This scholarship was established in 2002 in memory of Larry Dean Davis, a beloved founding member of the board of directors of the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children (now the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation-GA Chapter) who died in 2002 following a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. Davis was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and uncle, and a great friend to many. He was deeply committed to the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children and the children served.

Herbert Shaw, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

Candidates must be survivors of a pediatric brain or spinal cord tumor who are Georgia residents entering or currently enrolled in an educational program at a college, university, vocational school or other setting. The award will be paid directly to the student’s school.

This scholarship is awarded in loving memory of Herbert Shaw Jr., who passed away at age 19 in 2008, following a brave battle with brain cancer. Herbert was a great son, brother and uncle, and a friend to many. In addition to maintaining honor roll as a high school senior, he was homecoming king, a drum major for world-renowned Southwest Dekalb High School Marching Band, saxophonist, percussionist for Abundant Life Church of Lithonia, Ga., recipient of the Larry Dean Davis Scholarship and a compassionate individual. His dream was to finish college, start his own foundation to benefit brain tumor kids and to give scholarships as he had received. His memory and aspirations continue to inspire others to dream and achieve.
